District’s Hosting Ohio River Clean-Up
The Ohio River will
be the focus of events hosted by renowned environmental group, Living Lands and
Waters
in Evansville, Indiana. A series of community-based river clean-ups will be
held on May 5th, 8th, 9th, 15th & 16th;
educational workshops will be hosted by Gibson, Posey, Warrick and Vanderburgh
County Soil and Water
Conservation Districts on May 18th & 19th. The Crew will
arrive in Evansville on Wednesday, May 2nd, set up
& scout on May 3rd and 4th. This effort is to help
citizens of the Tri State learn about the issues confronting
the health of the Ohio River and her tributaries.
Volunteers of all
ages are needed to assist in the river cleanups. Volunteers are asked to wear
long pants and
disposable shoes. Bottled water, snacks, life jackets, gloves and bags will be
provided to all volunteers. Formal
and non-formal educators are invited to attend the FREE workshop being offered
on May 18th and 19th aboard
Living Lands & Waters’ floating classroom and plate boats. During the
interactive workshop, participants will be
taking part in such activities as: water quality sampling, tree identification,
examining mussel shells and watching
a commercial fisherman pull in his nets. Lunch will be provided and those
attending receive free educational
materials to use in the classroom.
These events are hosted by Living Lands & Waters, East Moline, IL, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America’s major rivers and to educating people about environmental issues.
